Not a “defining aspect”. I imagine some great apes, maybe even dogs and other mammals experience “empathy”. Compassion is closer to being an aspect. But it’s *an aspect of* what defines us as people: our universal capacity to construct explanations.

I agree with
@ToKTeacher that non-human animals can have empathy, and I feel that this elevates their status significantly. On the other hand, some humans lack it utterly, and I wonder about their status. -
It depends what they do - not feel. They’re still people. If it’s possible to not feel empathy and that actually causes one to do evil we should lock them up to the extent they’re shown dangerous.
