Since I had to teach today I figured I’d try and make it extra fun and give a whole lecture on the most EXTREME #birds I, and the avian hive mind, could come up with. For your learning pleasure I’ve translated it into the following thread. Enjoy!pic.twitter.com/fWKRGEIPtl

Harris’s hawks hunt cooperatively like wolves in some populations, especially in southern Arizona. Back-standing, as below, is a way to get a better view.

Common swifts have the longest sustained flight of any bird, remaining aloft for 10 consecutive months. Some occasionally take breaks but for 2hrs or less. We don’t know if/how they sleep. But maybe they take naps while descending from 10,000ft.pic.twitter.com/1G72JXvZ8V

Magnificent frigatebirds OTOH can fly up to 2months over the ocean without stopping. In fact they can’t stop, since they aren’t waterproof and will drown if they tried to float on the water. They take 10s naps in one or both brain hemispheres while riding updrafts.

Shrikes are a robin-sized insect and vertebrate eating passerines. They stab their prey onto thorns or tree forks in order to tear into it and cache it. On breeding territories northern shrikes can have bushes with up to a dozen dead bodies. This is a cached bumblebee I found.pic.twitter.com/f0NB2kGTBh

Elenora’s falcons also cache food. l including, during the breeding season, songbirds. Scientists recently discovered birds that were still alive, but their flight feathers had been plucked out. We don’t yet know if this is intentional by the falcons or not.

Arctic terns, who weigh only 3-5ounces, have the longest migration of any bird, flying from one pole to the other every year and logging 56,000 miles. They experience summer at each pole therefore experiencing more daylight hours than any other bird.pic.twitter.com/7TcPoRzWgm

Lammergeyers, or bearded vultures, are the only bird who specialize in eating bones. They drop intact large bones onto rocks, then swallow pieces the size of a fist.https://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/00000144-0a43-d3cb-a96c-7b4f89700000 …

While we’re talking about vultures, DYK vultures can safely digest anthrax, rabies, botulism, and cholera bacteria? They are SO important for disease control.

Namaque sandgrouse live in the deserts of SW Africa. Although the young are precocial and can find seeds to eat immediately, they can’t fly to water sources. So the males have specialized breast feathers that absorb water which they take back to chicks.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Of2Mu_D18I0 …

To impress females, male club-winged manakins have specialized secondary wing feathers they vibrate at 107 times/s, producing sound (hummingbirds only flap 90/s). To do this, one of their wings bones is solid, not hollow like other birds.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tSHjhCN6NC0 …

This is a real disadvantage for flying, including for females who also have heavy, solid bones. Some have speculated on this whole sexual selection is driven by fitness idea as a resulthttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/09/magazine/beauty-evolution-animal.html …

Secretary birds are lanky raptors that walk up to 20miles a day looking for food, which they often kill by stomping. This is especially helpful for venomous snakes.pic.twitter.com/6ThtGbYWR5

In eastern Australia black kites, whistling kites, and brown falcons are known as firehawks, because they are attracted to brush fires where they catch escaping prey. NBD. Oh, except they also carry burning sticks to intentionally start new fires. Birds are fucking badass.pic.twitter.com/MwohRGrSuC
