Squid are rad but corvids are better. There, now there’s no confusion who’s running this account right now.

I have been a Ruiner of Fun many times for gently pointing out that “cute” photos of hedgehogs balled up with spikes raised are taking joy in a terrified prey animal. Ethical cuteness: it’s a thing.

  4. More likely is that it’s just further testing the waters of unresponsiveness.

  5. Although cannibalism is rare among corvids, most first hand reports I’ve received abt it are observations of juvies doing it. Not asserting that’s what’s happening. Just offering among the possibilities.

  6. Towards the end of the video you can see one get a little more ambitious with its pecks, even removing some feathers. This is curious since it’s not territorial.

  7. So are these birds trying to wake this one up? I doubt it. I think they are just exploring an unresponsive bird and learning.

  8. It wasn’t until their parents came in and alarm called that many of them would start to alarm themselves or leave. Their behaviors did not differ towards dead crows, dead pigeons, or dead squirrels. It all looked like this.

  9. So here’s my interpretation as someone who studied this. These are all young birds, as is the dead one based on the tail length. I would often see young birds especially curious about the dead specimens, touching them, alarm calling, or remaining silent.

this is why we never were able to rehome shibas straight from the humane society i worked at & always sent them to rescues - they get messed with so much that they have no bite inhibition anymore

  11. No it’s not overt physical abuse. But it’s promoting the idea that our pets have no entitlement to boundaries. And that kind of thinking gets people bit, and dogs put down or surrendered. you should not be in the business of turning a blind eye to this.

  12. There’s other videos of them teasing their dog w/ food and covering their nose while they growl. At 34k followers their videos get a ton of interactions and it’s clear most people see nothing wrong. this isn’t ok. There should be specific ways to flag this stuff.

  13. There’s an account w/ 34k followers on @/sibaken_tiaga that’s just video after video of the owner ignoring their shiba’s boundaries & touching them despite growls, teeth, flat ears etc. They say it’s funny & enjoy their angry face.

  14. With time you introduce the command and phase out the reward. So training a dog to snarl on command would require, at some point, the owner to evoke growling/teeth baring via doing something that made the dog feel the need for that signal. So we’re back to square 1. Not cool.

  15. The way you train dogs (or anything) is by shaping existing behaviors. You don’t just say sit and the dog sits. You need to get the dog to offer the sit (by say moving a treat over their nose towards the tail) which you reward.

  16. And half the people are like “oh it’s cool, it’s trained!” Uh no it’s not. But sure let’s go with that for a min...

  17. I just found an account on IG whose content is almost 100% this person petting their sheba while it snarls. And everyone think it’s hilarious. It just makes me so sad. And mad! Smad! It makes me smad.

  18. The number of people who think it’s cute to pet their small dogs while they growl and bare teeth like it’s some cute joke is deeply troubling.

Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow today, so we’ll have four more years of climate science denial unless we vote the GOP out.
