Merging two independent assemblies (one from PacBio and another Nanopore), guided by Bionano maps, yielded a dramatically improved assembly of an inbred carrying maize Abnormal chromosome 10. The contig N50 is 162 Mb, with two fully gapless chromosomes.

Perennial corn is what sustainable agriculture should look like. This is perennial Zea (derived from Z. diploperennis x Z. mays [corn]). We had two early Nov. freezes (2nd earliest recorded), today these plants are back. Note bare traditionally prepared soil in background.

Retrotransposons are the major components of maize genomes but they are rarely seen transposing. This important study describes 30 new retrotransposon insertions and identifies lines that have high rates of transposition.

Poll's closed! there is an interesting spread of views about what makes different from biotech: *Bottom-up mechanistic understanding (what I can't create I don't understand) *Precision, efficiency, and reproducibility *Automation *High-throughput *Orthogonality

We had originally identified the closest homolog of Kindr as "ZmKin11". Huang et al show that ZmKin11, now called Varied kernel size (Vks), controls spindle morphology and cell division in early endosperm development.

TEs are responsible for a substantial amount of genomic variability (and gene content variation) in maize. Check out our preprint describing shared and variable TEs across whole genome assemblies of maize inbred lines!

This is disappointing - if the method doesn't work, it would be nice for people to know before wasting any more of their time (see thread) 😟

We asked the question, what happens to long DNA when it is introduced by biolistic methods? The answer is that it is usually broken. We were more surprised by what happened to the genome.
