...And we're in with permission. WhatsApp government is going to court. Huge thanks to everyone who has supported this case, and us, to make it possible.

Super important report.👇 "This is not the time to protest, but the time to go to war" - Hindu supremacist hate video with 1.4 MILLION views. It stayed up on FB until Time phoned. Facebook is failing the world's largest democracy - by refusing to staff moderators/deal w hate.

ICYMI - reported yesterday on the story of Facebook content moderators. Underpaid, exploited and barely mentioned in the debate over making social media safer - despite doing all the work. Have a read this morning:

Final thought from on yesterday (this time with subs!). "Maybe a platform [like Facebook] that is too big to moderate safely is too big to exist in its current size." Watch the full discussion here:

Facebook still allows racially targeted advertising and has been optimizing in-spite of this violating federal laws. Read the new research by tech lab researcher ! Journalists should be covering this independent study.

Haugen namechecks violence in Myanmar/Ethiopia as "opening chapters" of potential violence. As a Western-based (English-language) reporter, I feel very uncomfortable discussing the effects of FB in these countries. I would like to hear from people from those countries.

This is a good argument for sharp antitrust enforcement - not just against Facebook, but against other players with similar power. (Google)

Big week for tech news in the UK and US. As we discuss how to regulate Big Tech, let's also debate how we make sure government can't hide behind tech to delete our history and dodge democratic scrutiny. (Exciting morning over here. 🎃: bought. 📻: on.)

“if social media survives 10 more years like this, there will be only hatred.” - a Muslim man in Mumbai, after posters incited communal violence on Facebook. Whatever we think about the flaws w/ social media moderation in the US or UK, for 1.3 billion Indians, it's far worse.

Frances Haugen put predatory algorithms on the (mainstream) map, but the racism + sexism encoded into Internet tech is 's life's work. I interviewed the MacArthur Genius, thought leader and Meghan Markle/Archewell partner for :

It is obscene. And that - FB failing to pay the REAL cost of moderating Facebook - underlays virtually every problem we're all debating now. Yes, tweak algos. But you can't fix FB w/o addressing working conditions & staffing. In 2015 FB had two mods (in Dublin) on Myanmar.

🚨 NOW: We're outside the DC office! Together with moderators we're demanding pays her workers fairly. Accenture has a $500 million a yr contract with Facebook, Julie took home $17 million last year. Workers are paid poorly, fed up and demanding better. ✊

"AI does play a role in moderating content on Facebook, but as an anonymous content moderator told us, it mainly deals with benign posts. Human moderators are the ones tasked with sifting through the more disturbing content."
