Been thinking lately about how the difference between understanding something & not understanding it can be so dramatic. Noticed my wife go through this as she learned how to play one video game (Borderlands 2) and now has the “gamer vision” that lifelong gamers take for granted

i watched someone watch me play a ~deckbuilding card game last night (smash up) and realized that i had some kind of "card game vision" that she didn't, from i guess a combination of yu-gi-oh, dominion, ascension, etc.

Yup- am thinking about how this then applies to literally any domain. Eg I have “friend vision”, which might sound silly until you simultaneously realize that lots of people don’t have it, and also suffer from debilitating loneliness

huh, curious what you mean - like the ability to quickly scope people on friendship-related parameters?

more or less. being able to observe people, as individuals and as groups, and discerning how they relate to each other, what they care about, and figuring out how I can participate in a way that they will find enriching/valuable. seeing the openings, shooting my shots

What was the process that led you to acquiring this vision? Just... trying? (It seems that it's a realm where failures accumulate and mean less accessibility to further attempts)

a thing to learn as early as possible is how to make failures small and survivable, and how to recover from them gracefully. also there are always more new people and places to explore

Oh for sure. But I'm still curious about any friendship experiments you've done! (Or others have done, I wanna hear 'em all!)
