Scholastic apprenticeship was quite different in form to medieval guild apprenticeship, or to some modern apprenticeships like the German dual system. 2/n

But all apprenticeships have in common the transmission of knowledge from one who embodies it to one who would know. That transmission in person is quite mysterious. You can describe it in all sorts of ways, but it can only be known experientially. 3/n

Apprenticeships are often talked about but rarely undertaken in contemporary society. Personal transmission of embodied wisdom and knowledge takes years of commitment, patience, trial and error, frustration and determination. Many years, always. 4/n

Apprenticeships are slow, because it takes time to build the depth of appreciation and knowledge even to begin to understand what you don’t know and, more importantly, how you don’t know. 5/nhttps://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/carcinisation.com/2020/01/27/ignorance-a-skilled-practice/amp/ …

It’s a shame. We have a really strong tendency to want to ‘get what the other person has’. This drive to get the thing from the person can get relentless. On the one hand the desire to know is great, but it often lacks the commitment to embody. 6/n

Being meta to multiple systems can make this worse. The tendency is to get magnetized, mercilessly grok the thing, ‘get’ it, then move on. But of course you can’t get it like that. You have to slow down and live it, not just know it. 7/8

We need more apprenticeships, more embodied knowledge, more willingness to slow down and commit to learn how to do things well.

Do you have further thoughts on what a modern apprenticeship of this type would look like? How one might manifest it?

It requires institutonal change to become embedded culturally. I think the German system is closest to that: https://www.apprenticeship-toolbox.eu/germany/apprenticeship-system-in-germany/143-apprenticeship-system-in-germany …

There are prototype apprenticeships actoss different sectors e.g. the woofer system in small-scale farming/agriculture. Internships are a gesture towards it. Some religious institutions have long-term mentoring arrangements.
