Ah, right. Another way of framing this would be “rationalists are people who end up setting legible goals”, which in my estimation is directly related to why some of y’all are flat out depressedhttps://twitter.com/coponder/status/1239808796647555072 …

Mm... I get depressed rationalist types in my DMs every week or so. It’s not *just* the legible-ness- it’s surely possible to have legible goals and be happy - but i get this certain bleak, dull, “well that’s what I’m obligated to do” jail sentence vibe from a lot of them

Oh, I don't have a great sense of why rationalists are depressed, to be honest. I arrived at rationality from a roundabout way and don't have the same history, so it's hard for me to see. My sense it has something to do with the bleakness of the Effective Altruism branch?

It could be the other way around too, so it’s messy - ie some subset of smart, depressed people throw themselves into rationalism with a sort of bleak workaholism. Yes to the EA thing for sure, they practically all mention it

Good insight. I'm sure it's a little of both. (And disambiguation for the audience - rationality/rationalism aren't interchangeable)
