Mm... I get depressed rationalist types in my DMs every week or so. It’s not *just* the legible-ness- it’s surely possible to have legible goals and be happy - but i get this certain bleak, dull, “well that’s what I’m obligated to do” jail sentence vibe from a lot of them

Oh, I don't have a great sense of why rationalists are depressed, to be honest. I arrived at rationality from a roundabout way and don't have the same history, so it's hard for me to see. My sense it has something to do with the bleakness of the Effective Altruism branch?

So rationalists who attempt meditate (or do similar non-legible, non-measurable activities - exploring chakras, etc) are taking a leap of faith. (And of course some rationalists are alarmed by this because rationality has a background of atheism & anti-theism)
