I've had a few friends privately tell me that they're struggling to have and exert a sense of self - Is this common for your mid-twenties? Or is it a societal movement? (I think it's correlated with atomization, and also a common step on the way to self-authoring)

I think you're probably right - but also, what is the difference between the person who thinks "I'm bad" (and has that opinion about their 'self'), and the person who has no opinions on their 'self'?

"i'm bad" is not an opinion of the self, it's an opinion of the false-self neither of those has a particular bearing on the self

the "false-self" is the piling-up of things that have been imposed upon you and internalized: "you should think X", "you are a bad person if you think X", "you should feel X", etc.

a type of emotional neglect creates a "false self" that is an extension of demands of parents, authority figures, and so on a voice that says "you should want X", and confuses it with the idea of an actual "want", or "you should feel X", and confuses it with real feeling

none of these are the actual self, and so "whether or not you have a feeling of 'i'm bad'" isn't necessarily something that dependent on how much 'self' one has

I do agree with you on these points! I'm glad you pointed out the false-self that's constructed socially (generally). In a different fork of this thread, I mention a nihilistic stage after throwing out the false-self; does that track for you as well? (just a lil sanity check)
