I think you're probably right - but also, what is the difference between the person who thinks "I'm bad" (and has that opinion about their 'self'), and the person who has no opinions on their 'self'?
I'm still not sure what a sense of self looks like and I'm in my mid 30s. I'm not sure I don't have one, I just don't know how I'd tell.
Some ways to frame the 'self': 1) descriptive: the patterns of your past actions 2) prescriptive: your aspirations, intentions, values The friends asking this question have trouble with #2 in particular - they haven't decided what would be meaningful, perhaps.
I lost my sense of self after working long hours at a soulless job. To recover, I basically ended up opting out of society (living off my savings, moving far away from everyone). I would have been ~24 at the time
Happy to say that a few years later my sense of self is back with a vengeance
I think i am struggling with purpose atm because i got into where i want in my career a lot earlier than i thought, so im having to think about what i really want to achieve, when im not so cash-strapped anymore. That is a good struggle i think. And necessary.
And the thing is, i am quite naturally purpose-driven and now it is just a matter of taking the right operations to fulfill my vague promises to myself that relate to my own moral values (eg giving back, creating a social entreprise...)
Yes, it's very common. Carl Jung has been writing about "Individuation," a process that ideally ends in one's 20s, since at least the 1930s, as well as why more recent Western generations particularly have struggled to complete the processhttps://youtu.be/ssuDqtUcKEw
