for me, socializing relies on conscious OODA loops the loops are pretty fast these days but I manage them intentionally. letting my brain just do its own thing doesn't work very well I have heard that other people can socialize intuitively and I am jealous of their arcane power

This is a really interesting description and intuition pump.

it's very difficult to talk about because we don't have a succinct way to differentiate "social muscle memory" (what I have developed) from "social intuition" it's not even clear that these are different things at core — maybe it's a continuum

My guess is that they're not all that different, though age perhaps plays a role. People who developed social muscle memory for certain types of thing at a younger age may appear & feel more natural later. Ofc, practicing something for years usually makes it seem more natural!

sonya! supposedly? @sonyasupposedlymy articulation of this internal phenomenon is not original, it's cribbed from Alice Maz https://status451.com/2016/01/06/splain-it-to-me/ … on the backend, what presents as social intuition phenotypically (so to speak) is actually "a tool I can observe and utilize, but ultimately a thing apart from me." pic.twitter.com/hns1lNysXGShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -
gosh I love the idea of “social muscle memory.” That seems to explain a lot of my experience. Historically I’ve often used the CPU (general purpose computer) vs. GPU (specialized/accelerated computer) metaphor:https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/aTtf9iERDoptPD33j/the-social-coprocessor-model …

This is very interesting. I've (so far) had 3 social phases in my life with what seem to me to be completely different intuitive foundations. And the 2 shifts were totally deliberate. Is that a retraining of the social muscle then?

That is super interesting. Could you say more on the different foundations and different shifts?
