I enjoy reading books, even mediocre books. Fiction and non-fiction. But I rarely enjoy starting books. I’ve been experimenting with starting by jumping around more to find a part that hooks me, but it hasn’t worked well yet.

It feels effortful to load a bunch of context up. And I’m also trying to decide if the endeavor is going to be worth it. I get the same thing starting a new TV show. I don’t get it starting the next book in a series, and I get it much less if I’ve read a lot from the author.

Seems like you may have low expectation of reward for new stuff. I’ve noticed we’ll have a movie or book on the back burner for this reason so make an effort to give it twenty minutes.
