I've experienced 2 possibilities come up 1. Some part of you is afraid you'll follow through on the idea, and that might break something in your life or self concept, it puts you to sleep to keep you safe 2. Sleep let's your unconscious mind work through details / implications

A bit of both, I think - I used to get sleepy when having conflict with others, so it's def a defense mechanism I've had. Writing as much as possible about the idea before taking that nap seems to be an okay intervention.
