Language is a funny thing. There's "female genital mutilation" and "circumcision". The only thing different is the sex of the child. Neither practice is necessary in today's world.

I understand people being against circumcision, but I don’t think that it’s on the same level, or even all that close to FGM.

it's literally not the same thing at all.

Agreed. I respect Dr. Keita a lot, and I usually agree with him. But I think it almost trivializes one of the worst human rights abuses of the modern world (FGM) to say it’s the same

Sorry for giving that impression. They aren't remotely the same. They are both unnecessary.https://twitter.com/rasmansa/status/971460401841000454 …

Dr. Mansa Keita @rasmansaI think I see something here. I didn't mean to give the impression that I equate the 2 procedures. I do not. One is clearly more damaging physically. I DO consider them both unnecessary. I DO consider it morally hypocritical to be okay with mutilating males.Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 5 likes -

lots of things are unnecessary thought. So why compare it to a horrific thing that is done specifically to reduce women's enjoyment of sex and to control women?

Because both are indeed mutilating the genitals of a baby. One is accepted, and the other isn't. One is physically less harmful than the other, but that fact remains true.

I don't find it difficult in the least to say female genital mutilation should end. Simultaneously, I don't think it difficult in the least to say male genital mutilation should end.

"Female genital mutilation" describes a range of practices that are different from each other and from the most commonly performed type of male genital mutilation. Genital mutilation - whether female or male - should never be done to healthy children. #i2 http://quillette.com/2017/08/15/female-genital-mutilation-health-benefits-problem-medicalizing-morality/ …
