It's worth pointing out that men who have chosen adult circumcision report that sexual pleasure, while perhaps slightly different, is neither more nor less. And there are medical benefits... The same cannot be said for adult women who have had their vagina mutilated.

Yep! They chose it! It’s awesome when people can make choices about their own bodies.

(And, yes, there are adult women who choose to be circumcised for cultural reasons: https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/04/female-genital-mutilation-cutting-anthropologist/389640/ …)

"WHO was able to show a statistically significant association between FGC and... Things like infant death, hemorrhage... the chances of having sexually transmitted infections and pelvic inflammatory disease, and it was positive..." sounds very different from male circumcision...

Right, which is why I'd hope that while you may be opposed to spanking children (as am I), you wouldn't equate it to physical abuse that causes death.

Yup! I think both mild and severe child battery should be illegal, and I think both mild and severe child genital cutting should be illegal.

But you do agree that there is far more ambiguity about the potential harm and potential benefits of female genital cutting than for males?

I don’t see your point. I’ve devoted my life to persuading parents to not spank their kids, but sure: being beaten to death is worse.

I mean to say that your wording seems to suggest that cutting the foreskin off a baby boy's penis should be thought of the same way as vaginal cutting, and I think the comparison is about as off as comparing spanking to fatal beating.

And I think you should read this analysis by a Yale bioethicist and reconsider. http://quillette.com/2017/08/15/female-genital-mutilation-health-benefits-problem-medicalizing-morality/ …
