@CMSGov is ALREADY recommending THERAPEUTIC surgeries/procedures be "considered" for postponement or postponed "if possible." Surgeries for conditions like "low risk cancer" (as if there is such a thing). Surgeries the patient actually NEEDS & WANTS. #i2 https://www.cms.gov/files/document/31820-cms-adult-elective-surgery-and-procedures-recommendations.pdf …

The CMS recommendation for surgeries/procedures to treat a condition that is not life-threatening & has no "potential for further morbidity [or] mortality" is even firmer: postpone it. Why? They are a lower priority than surgery for conditions WITH such potential

What about surgeries that are an even LOWER priority than EVERY one of the tiered surgeries on the CMS chart - because they DON'T TREAT ANY PRESENTLY EXISTING ADVERSE CONDITION in the patient? Postpone them ALL until the
#COVID19 national emergency is over, right?#i2#MedEd1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
It just so happens that 1 of these entirely cosmetic & unnecessary surgeries IS THE MOST COMMONLY PERFORMED SURGERY IN THE UNITED STATES. There are about 3,000 PER DAY. Over the course of the projected 18 month
#COVID19 pandemic, that adds up to 1.5 million unneeded surgeries#i21 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
As the need to re-supply hospitals with
#PPE like surgical gloves gets ever more desperate, and as retired MDs and medical students get pressed into round-the-clock service to save lives, think about the waste in resources & time involved with 3,000 unneeded surgeries per day#i21 reply 4 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -
Yet despite all this, here's my cynical prediction: NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS - even if US MDs tell cancer patients to put off their cancer surgeries due to
#COVID19, not a SINGLE 1 of the US-health-care-system-clogging surgeries I'm talking about will be stopped or postponed.#i22 replies 2 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
I hope I'm proven wrong about that, and ALL US hospital systems will IMMEDIATELY put into place a MANDATORY MORATORIUM on all child
#circumcisions that is not absolutely needed to treat a presently existing adverse condition (i.e., nearly all child#circumcisions).#i2#MedEd1 reply 3 retweets 2 likesShow this thread
One thing is for certain though: the #COVID19 crisis is about to do 1 of 2 profoundly remarkable things. Either it will end all non-religious child #circumcisions in the US for as long as the crisis continues (at least), or it will show US MDs have no clue how to #triage. #i2
