/33 Why does the #AAP act as if there’s one bioethical standard for the amputation of a child’s healthy #foreskin & another bioethical standard for the amputation of every other part of a child’s body, including all female genitalia? #i2 #AAP18 #VoteKidshttps://quillette.com/2017/08/15/female-genital-mutilation-health-benefits-problem-medicalizing-morality/ …

/33 For obvious reasons, many people consider their genitals to be their most valuable non-vital body part. And nearly everyone considers them their most personal & private parts. Why should anyone be forced to let someone else surgically reduce them? #i2 #AAP18 #VoteKids

/33 Why should #foreskin be the only body part whose worth needs to be proven? Why is amputation of foreskin the only preventative amputation considered to be “medical”? Why should foreskin be excepted from the bioethical rules that apply to every other body part & procedure?

/33 How is it ethical to strap down a healthy boy & tear his penis apart w/out medical need, when all forms of #FGM are rightly condemned, even a pinprick? Consider that what’s said in the #AAP #circumcision policy under “ethical issues” applies equally to FGM. #i2 #AAP18

/33 When parents “consent” to have #FGM performed on their children, do those MDs performing it get a free pass for their conduct? The #AAP needs to stop blaming parents & take responsibility for their ethical duties to their child patients. #i2 #AAP18 #tweetiatrician #meded

/33 Amputation of healthy tissue is a drastic treatment of last resort, to be used only when needed b/c more conservative treatment of a serious, presently existing, adverse clinical condition would be ineffective. That’s never the case for a newborn’s healthy #foreskin. #AAP18

/33 Are cut men to believe that the penis part that’s removed is so bad, when what’s not cut is so good? Not just any part is cut, but the part intact men almost universally call most sensitive. How is amputating unique, healthy, & sensitive genital tissue from a child ethical?

/33 AAP’s frustration at its inability to address these & similar questions has never been greater, & increases all the time. Some #tweetiatricians block/mute them & it’s clearly b/c there’s no way to defend the amputation of healthy #foreskin from a child’s body as ethical.

/33 But that frustration is not equivalent to the frustration & moral outrage #circumcision opponents have at the AAP’s failure to acknowledge basic truths about circumcision, especially its psychological harms. Mr. Arel tells us “My psychologist told me to get over it.” #i2

/33 Those attending this #AAP session should consider 2 real-life examples. First, what not to do. @DrLovlie begins by implying that a man’s opinion about what was done to his own body w/out his consent matters only if it’s supported by “data” showing his view to be popular.pic.twitter.com/eLMcqfsjSt
