You might say the polite thing to do would be to invent a little white lie to avoid hurt feelings ("it's not you it's me"). And if the problem was almost anything else, or if you knew he was firmly against circumcision, I might agree w/you. The trouble w/that approach...

...is that he may never learn there's a downside to being cut, & you can't underestimate a cut man's tendency to rationalize it. A polite but firm rejection for that reason, as painful as it might be, could end up being the thing that ultimately saves his sons from being cut.
