The research keeps pointing to infant male circumcision as the causation of SIDS. How can #AAP continue to support it.

Technically, the 2012 @AmerAcadPeds statement says the risk-benefit ratio is reasonable for those who choose it (usually parents are doing it for cultural reasons) but don’t routinely recommend it. In comparison, VitK injection at birth is standard of care #Pediatrics

Actually in the USA Docs and hospitals sell it as Medically necessary to prevent a whole host of diseases. It’s a Billion Dollar industry. Tho intactivist r using research to debunking their sales pitch to uninformed parents.

Please avoid generalizing “docs and hospitals.” None of the places I’ve worked routinely recommended circ, and I wasn’t even trained to do it in residency. I only bring it up with parents if the boy has some condition that would actually be a contraindication, or they ask.

I’ve only trained and worked in the USA, which would be obvious if you looked at my profile. Here is another reference that summarizes the debate and suggests how all parties can continue to provide education and have productive discussions http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/pediatrics/early/2016/04/04/peds.2016-0594.full.pdf …

Appreciate your comments Dr. Chen. To borrow a phrase from Dr. Freedman, "given the role of the phallus in our culture," I strongly resent the circumcision forced on me during my birth hospitalization. Do you think the doctor who cut me ought to apologize to me? Why/why not? #i2

My instinctive answer is it may be more up to your parents to apologize to you - they would have been required to consent to the procedure (or ask for it in the first place!)

If a woman told you she strongly resented having been forced as a girl to take a pinprick to her genitals - by a US MD - would it be your "instinctive answer" to tell her only her parents, not her MD, should apologize? My parents didn't hold the knife. They weren't even in the room. The nature & risks of the surgery weren't explained to them. They owe me an apology - for trusting a US MD. Is it really your position that the MD who amputated my foreskin has NO responsibility for that act? #i2

Thanks for the interesting read. I did not mean to imply the MD has NO responsibility, simply that (s)he would not be the only one who owed you an apology.

Thank you for clarifying that the doctor who amputated my #foreskin w/out my #consent owes me an apology for that. And thank you for helping to break down the #WhiteCoatWallofSilence that surrounds this practice. #tweetiatrician #tweetiatricians #i2 #putkids1st #AAP18 @AAPNews
