I will point out that this has not yet been peer reviewed and we all (should) know correlation ≠ causation, but the international data collection is impressive, adding to eternal #circumcision debate

The research keeps pointing to infant male circumcision as the causation of SIDS. How can
#AAP continue to support it.2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

Technically, the 2012
@AmerAcadPeds statement says the risk-benefit ratio is reasonable for those who choose it (usually parents are doing it for cultural reasons) but don’t routinely recommend it. In comparison, VitK injection at birth is standard of care#Pediatrics4 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -
Actually in the USA Docs and hospitals sell it as Medically necessary to prevent a whole host of diseases. It’s a Billion Dollar industry. Tho intactivist r using research to debunking their sales pitch to uninformed parents.

Please avoid generalizing “docs and hospitals.” None of the places I’ve worked routinely recommended circ, and I wasn’t even trained to do it in residency. I only bring it up with parents if the boy has some condition that would actually be a contraindication, or they ask.

I’ve only trained and worked in the USA, which would be obvious if you looked at my profile. Here is another reference that summarizes the debate and suggests how all parties can continue to provide education and have productive discussions http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/pediatrics/early/2016/04/04/peds.2016-0594.full.pdf …

I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts on the attached. In particular, do you agree it's time to retire the
#AAP's 2012 circumcision policy & have a new one prepared by a task force that includes at least SOME physician opponents of the practice?#i2https://www.researchgate.net/publication/316527603_Cultural_bias_in_American_medicine_the_case_of_infant_male_circumcision …1 reply 1 retweet 1 like -

@AmerAcadPeds regularly reviews/revises policies, though it takes years. The 2012 statement was from a task force created in 2007 (last set was 1999) so for all I know, it’s already in process. What’s tricky is again, circs are performed by many non-pediatricians2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
True, if #AAP followed the Danish Medical Ass'n 2016 statement & found child #circumcision "ethically unacceptable," not all #circumcision would end. But to #putkids1st means protecting them from unneeded, amputative surgery to which they can't #consent.https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/denmarks-29000-doctors-declare-circumcision-of-healthy_us_58753ec1e4b08052400ee6b3 …
