But what does seem new is this “mother of democracy” expression. Can’t recall any PM using it before. And while India’s democracy is known internationally, I’ve never heard anyone refer to it as “mother of democracy”... very doubtful that this is a popular perception abroad. 3/4

Well, that’s quite a claim. But for the benefit of doubt let’s offer the PM that claim.A more pertinent question however is whether democracy is being practiced?Or has it been backsliding in India?It’s no point righteously claiming the origin of an idea if one cannot uphold it.
