There are other signs these images are inauthentic: nonsensical clothing (especially the bizarre "hat" in 's profile pic), surreal backgrounds, and mismatched ears, among others.

A bit of both - programmatically searching for new blue ticks with "filter:blue_verified lang:en" (not 100% reliable but seems to mostly work) and perusing those for GAN accounts.
