I loved seeing Daniel Crooks’ “Phantom Ride” at last week. (It was all the more poingant wondering how the country traversed has survived this fire season.)

There’s a lot to enjoy in the 28 chapters of this volume on Graham Priest’s contributions to logic, including Graham’s responses (in one chapter), and his reflections on crossing boundaries between logic and different traditions and topics in philosophy.

I reckon a PM could recall Parliament now and pass a comprehensive climate policy and federalised fire response force to massive public acclaim about now. Feels like Howard and guns.

  11. Three great books by three important—and very different—Australian authors. This was a good year.

  12. I especially loved the way Tsiolkas explored the way that the Jesus movement(s)’ refigured social relationships, with far reaching consequences for gender, class, and ethnicity/religion. The chapter on Lydia, especially, will stay with me for a long time.

  13. The last entry on my favourite list for this year was Christos Tsiolkas’ Damascus. A historical novel centred on the life of the apostle Paul/Saul in the first century CE.

  14. Nonetheless, I persisted, and I’m glad I did. Along with last year’s Down Girl by , See What You Made Me Do is an important entry into the public conversation about the horrors of male violence and the patriarchy. We have much to learn and much to change.

  15. Second is ’s See What You Made Me Do. This unflinching look at the epidemic of domestic abuse in Australia was hard to get through, despite being well written, because of the harrowing realities of abuse faced by so many women and children.

  16. First, ’s novel, Terra Nullius. It’s a striking tale of invasion and dispossession, both despairing and hopeful. Scenes have lived on in my imagination, and I see my country and my place as a descendent of newcomers here, in a new way.

  17. As the year winds up, I like to look over my list of books I’ve read in the last 12 months. It was a relatively quiet year, with 27 non-work books on the list. There were three clear highlights in this big pile of books.

  19. You can push this adventure “game” in unexpected directions. (It seems to have a thing for prime numbers, though its perspective on them seems a little… idiosyncratic.)
