I think the most interesting element to Petya isn't Petya or the wiping of systems - it's that ME Doc was a remote implant on ~400k PCs...
I don't quite get why they burned that access they had, all those backdoors could have been exploited for more gain.

Because they have more? I think WannaCry burnt the EternalBlue exploit for them, so they decided to burn it all
