A journalistic example I wrote about at length: Cathy Newman repeatedly and egregiously misstating and misrepresenting his views so as to render than as offensive and beyond the pale as possible:https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/01/putting-monsterpaint-onjordan-peterson/550859/ …

This piece (in a usually wonderful, award-winning magazine) that twists itself in logical pretzels in a wow-that's-a-stretch effort to stigmatize Peterson as an unwitting fascist and anti-Semite https://psmag.com/education/jordan-peterson-sliding-toward-fascism …

This list doesn't even include *anything* from social media. And I'm rushing to get to other work--you're getting what I could quickly Google while trying to think all this through. But it seems fair to say serious efforts to render someone beyond the pale are afoot when

But it seems fair to say serious efforts to render someone beyond the pale are afoot when among other things 1) hundreds of folks at their university want them fired 2) they're getting disciplinary letters from their superiors 3) they need to spend big on event security

4)Multiple events they plan inspire calls for no platforming; 5) there are efforts to ban them from facilitator platforms like Patreon and from YouTube What academic wouldn’t feel there were serious efforts to expel them from respectable discourse after all that?

I think people unfairly subject to such treatment should be defended, and not just or mostly for their sake—maintaining a common discourse requires it. It isn’t the most important issue in the world—I’ve written scores of articles about the Trump admin and one about JP—

But the “you’re overreacting chorus” miss the fact that some bad scenarios don’t materialize or seem like anything to worry about *because* vigilant defenders of liberal norms speak up early and vigorously in their defense

Conor, Thank you so much for doing such great journalism: nuanced, clear, and thoughtful. You and the Atlantic are inspiring in such times of biased "reporting"

Conor, @JesseBrown did an excellent episode of his show on this. Short summary: Peterson isn't arguing, he is trolling for $$. Really good stuff gets going at 15:00. http://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/canadaland-guide-jordan-b-peterson/ …

I will listen, but from the podcasts I’ve heard most of his oeuvre is consistent with everything he said long before he was famous. Still, thanks for the link and I’ll give it a hearing!

The cool part here is that you don't have to actually prove the treatment is unfair. You just say it is, smear everyone who opposes the guy with no research or thought whatever and move on. A power move by Conor, bravo.

"maintaining a common discourse requires it" This is the same reason to point out the many false statements Trump makes so casually. Hypothesis: The two phenomena seem related as symptoms of a loss of standards for public discourse due to its hyper-democratization. 1/2

Brought about by the internet generally and social media specifically as platforms devoid of gatekeepers. So now there is an attempt to democratize the gatekeeper role. In this sense, Trump's "fake news" allegations are analogous in some sense to the no-platforming of JP. 2/2
