Political discourse circa 2019: Joe Biden’s anecdote about a near fight as a teenage lifeguard a half century ago generates more criticism, attention and inquiry than his Iraq War vote. After all, a funny name was involved! What a frivolous political culture we inhabit.

True. At the same time, it may be fair to consider that his decision to tell such an anecdote betrays either no self-control or a profound lack of understanding of the political/cultural moment he inhabits and of the sometimes fair criticisms of his fitness for this moment.

"Biden shouldn't have voted for the Iraq War. He probably shouldn't be the nominee." "I agree." Ok cool, we got that out of the way.

You have to admit... it's a weird story. Like he walked out of Blackboard Jungle.

It's also a true story, corroborated by people who were there.

Amazing isn't it? I'm sure I remember on TV for years people waving flags and talking about supporting the troops - a false memory. It turns out everyone was strongly anti war, a nation of non-interventionists and pacifists who mourned every Iraqi death. Fickle memory, eh.

What's the point? Nobody faced any consequences over Iraq, and nobody ever will. What's the point of shouting for justice anymore? At this point, all that's left for working people is to joke. Our ruling class killed a million people and wasted the wealth of a generation.

When, in modern history has the US electorate not been poorly informed & shallow? We are famous around the world for this.
