I think members of the Trump coalition are more likely to be energized and less likely to be turned off by flagrant incivility than members of the relatively more civil anti-Trump coalition. Do you disagree?https://twitter.com/tomscocca/status/1010920260030083073 …

I doubt it will matter much -- can we move away from this notion that the vast majority of Trump voters care what liberals say about anything? It's not as if they'd vote differently if Robert De Niro didn't curse in public.

How liberals behave can energize or mitigate support for Trump, though. How liberals speak can alienate moderates and those who don't follow news closely. There is a strange tendency for people to decide that what they read in 100 twitter feeds defines how Democrats are campaigning in races across the country.

Of course it doesn’t, but my feed is filled with influential people convincing one another that an all out incivility fest against Trump voters is the best way forward

I read their argument differently. As opinion makers, they are saying that enforcing norms of discourse civility sends a message that this is a conventional political moment, and that this is dangerously misleading.

There's a difference b/w shunning political operatives like Sanders, who shld know better, and saying it doesn't matter how you treat Trump voters. I tend to think the former is appropriate and important, while the latter is counterproductive.

Oh, I'm pretty sure Trump is going to keep pounding out more racist policies and anti-immigrant hysteria to keep them coming out. They will *always* create a liberal bogeyman no matter what we do. These are the same people who dreamed up "death panels", FFS.

This take is so bad. They don't care about anything. Civil response? We're cucks or libtards. Uncivil response? We're resorting to cursing instead of making a valid point. There is no winning an argument with them so to hell with civility.

They agree with Trump’s American Carnage even when disproven by facts. I feel like it’s a political mob lynching party. They are out to exact vengeance against the “other”. They are haters all right. Perhaps one day, they will feel ashamed.

The last thing the D's need to do more is think in terms of the meta-game. They've often talked themselves out of simple strategy in favor of moderation and some vague notion of "electability." The base is saying, "Fuck these people, let's get 'em." They'd be wise to listen.
