Well first off the flu vaccine is actually 3 guesses as to the most likely strains in the next 12 months. Thats why its a new vaccine every year. If they get it wrong then you still get the flu. They are quite good at guessing, but influenza mutates rapidly, so only about 40%

Do not get me wrong, the flu vaccine is very important development, and as we learn more about it I will (hopefully) happy to move towards viewing it in the same light as measles, etc... but I do not think taking it should be made a *condition of employment*

And even if it becomes as well known as the measles vaccine, we do have to start questioning whether forcing people to receive injections is a good policy. Patients with mental health issues are allowed to refuse antipsychotic medication injections even if they are good for them!

Plus the big difference the flu vaccine has, you need a new one every year. This can lead to another *potential* issue homogeneity of our immune response markers. When you recover from the flu "naturally" your immune system will have picked its own markers...

If you get your immunity from the flu vaccine, your body will have responded to the markers in the vaccine, i.e. the same markers as everyone else. I don't know how big the markers that the immune system picks up on are, but as viruses mutate, homogeneity is normally not great

We have some differences because there are different manufacturers of the vaccine, so they likely have slightly different markers... and the effect might take a while to show up... and with 40% efficacy it probably doesn't matter anyway...

But *if* the flu vaccine was 95% effective, and we all took it with a resulting homogeneity of immune response markers... a single cross-over of the flu (remember we cannot eradicate the flu because of bird and pig vectors) and we could have trouble.

      1. If you don't want to catch the flu, the flu vaccine is the best way to avoid it (you still may end up catching the flu 60% of the time) 2. If you are in an at-risk group, get the vaccine

However, if you are a strong healthy adult, I think you should be able to opt out if you are concerned about potential side-effects, for example Pandemrix has been linked to Narcolepsy http://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/influenza/seasonalinfluenza/publications/influenzavaccinationpublications/narcolepsyassociatedwithpandemicvaccination/ … 6 per 100000 vs 0.5 per 100000, as for some that may not be worth 40%

I am fine with incentives for adults to take the flu vaccine... but just don't make their continuity in employment contingent on taking the flu vaccine. (can revisit in 10-20 years when more is known) /END

Again, as I said earlier, I am fine with general hospital front line staff (and perhaps staff working in shared spaces). Because risk assessment. But it shouldn’t be blanket. What about physiotherapists working in a hospital dedicated to treating ABI? The client base risk matters

No not END. That is a very very selfish pov. If you are working with patients who already have compromised immune systems, why would you risk bringing them the flu, measles etc? The flu shot is not just about you.

Red Herring logical fallacy there. I am arguing against compulsory annual flu vaccinations being mandatory for *all* employees of the HSE... even the PostgreSQL DBAs who have ZERO contact with either patient or even the staff that are in contact with frontline staff.
