Seriously wondering how many of my followers would be annoyed if I posted almost nothing but tiny growing out of brickwork and pavement cracks from now till mid march, because I am definitely tempted.

Well, it looks like we are officially back on the Pansy kick. Who can resist those cute little suckers? This is another one from 2017, somewhere in Philly. I don't remember where exactly.

"Flowers are better pollinated in cities than in the countryside". In a German study, 3/4 of urban pollinators recorded were bumblebees.🐝Able to nest in walls & bare soil and feed in parks, they are less exposed to pesticides too.

These Chinese mallows pop up in the West Leyes area in Rugby. Today they are close to the source of the seed they originally came from. Outside the poultry feed suppliers where I get wild bird seed.

Handy flash card I keep on my phone and revert to the detailed guides if any indecision.

Shot of the day: I noticed this little Pansy growing out of a back street curb on my way home from sorting books this morning. It was a timely find, just having been discussing them yesterday. It is the first of the year for me.

The 3rd of the 3 outbreaks of "wild" Wishbone Flowers (Torenia fournieri) that I found back in 2017, were in the Southwark region. I didn't get very good shots of them because they were on the south side of the street behind a planter so there wasn't much light.

These 2 shots are of the 2nd of the 3 outbreaks of crack-dwelling Wishbone Flower (Torenia fournieri) I found back in 2017. All 3 were in South Philly, the 1st 2 in areas not particularly known for fancy weeds.

These two shots are from the first outbreak that I found.

2017 was a good year for me finding stray volunteer ornamentals. Beyond all the Pansies, I came across three outbreaks of crack-dwelling Wishbone Flower (Torenia fournieri). I hadn't seen it growing "wild" before that year and haven't since.

The leaves have an almost Mountain Laurel-esque texture, a bit on the glossy side.

The undersides of the leaves are lighter, but by no means white so Populus alba seems out of the question.

I went back today to take another few shots of this little one. Those white spots are quite striking. I don't know if it is a permanent feature of the species or if it is something happening because it is winter and it is starting to die back.

Earlier this month, I predicted this might happen, though in the broken sentence of an interrupted thought.

Helping out at a bookstore is inevitably veering me towards a bibliophilia relapse. For a few bucks, how am I supposed to resist a 1954 University of Illinois publication called "Weeds of the North Central States"? I haven't even made room to squeeze the last book in there.

Unidentified crackplant #02 Any botanists out there have any ideas what this little hardwood crackplant might be?

Natural miniature plant arrangement on a sandstone wall. Rue leaved saxifrage (Saxifraga tridactylites), buddleja, pearlwort (Sagina sp.), all relying on moss and lichen.

Unidentified crackplant #01 Any botanists out there on Twitter want to comment on this? I have suspicions, but they are only that. The variegation on this is interesting. I would love to know what it is.
