Very nice! The fact that the visual cx discriminates better than the animal that owns that cx is very puzzling. I tried myself to discriminate between them and it becomes very easy if you pay attention to the top right corner.

In this example, Maybe neurons in visual cx coding for the top right corner increase discrimination power of the population but unless the mouse pays attention to that corner they remain unheard and so they don’t influence behavior?

Doesn't this raise questions about the decoding exercise itself? It might be interesting to know if a decoder, trained on correct discriminations, performs more poorly on errors.

Interesting, the visual cortex can decode that tiny difference. But the mouse can?

No. See our fig3 and fig1b in this preprint from

congrats! Also check this older paper showing that decoding from V1 outperforms monkey behavior in the detection task (although your effect is much more pronounced + I am taking nothing away from your result, just informing you about this reference!)https://www.nature.com/articles/nn1792

Really interesting that even using a very low # of PCs you're still much better than behavioral performance. Makes me wonder what would happen if you recomputed the PC axes using natural image responses rather than gratings.
