For the life of me can’t understand why no one great will run for office. Why is SF politics the epitome of adverse selection?

As someone who has run, and has helped on many campaigns: great people *are* running (and losing). In a one-party city it is extremely difficult to distinguish yourself from the corrupt incumbents. They control the political machine -- ironically its the only thing they run well.
