I believe that people who commit crimes must be held to answer. But in ways that reduce rather than create future crime. In other words, I ask them “are you sorry?”, and they answer “yeah”, and then I say “good, here’s your gift card, now get outta here you crazy kid!” Sometimes I even remember to say “don’t do it again!!!” as they’re walking away and laughing.
