I only kept Flight Simulator installed until it got helicopters; they’re out today and… are they unplayable with a gamepad or what? The relevant assists are enabled by default yet the chopper starts spinning out of control as soon as it spawns, with no way I’ve found to fix it.

If we used a low resolution texture (64x64) to save memory the “static” would be blurry and not crisp. One engineer on the team came up with a great idea: what if we just use the memory holding the Metroid Prime code itself! We quickly tried it out and it looked amazing.

Funny, literally the other week I did a talk in front of students about Environment Art at Rebellion and one of my sentences was "you can't just drop in carbon copy of whatever IRL building you want in your game, without checking with legal departments beforehand". Guess some do.

Yikes. There goes the hope of someone countering Meta’s lead in affordable VR. And that thing will probably never get Beat Saber 😕 How much money is Meta losing on the Quest 2 exactly, that Sony can’t make a *wired* headset cheaper? It needs no storage or battery!

PS VR2 arrives on February 22nd and it costs a whopping $550 engt.co/3FEXHhk
The way Musk is panicking about revenue, the parts of the API that allow for third-party clients are going to disappear very quickly and suddenly. That'll get me to stop using Twitter all right.

The Death Stranding bike starts very fast and immediately plateaus at the speed of a running man, which is the worst possible design choice. If it’s powerful enough to start that fast, it should definitely not stop accelerating so soon.

The only Kojima game I’d played was MGSV (I know, I know…) so I wasn’t prepared for how damn chatty Death Stranding is 😩 Anyway, just as I was wishing I played as a Russian truck in the mud, the game gave me a bike and… it’s just not fun to ride? So I’m probably done.

Unbelievable moment in the new Call of Duty campaign, where, stalking through a trailer park, the game tells you to de-escalate a situation, and "de-escalating" means pointing your gun directly at civilians

Finally started Death Stranding. I’d had it installed for months and was put off by the Kojima-ness… for good reason. 1. Damn it’s pretty. So sharp in 1080p I thought it was 4K. (Still runs great in 4K.) 2. First time in my life I hope the story ends with “it was all a dream.”
I think filling the screen with all H.R. Giger all the time might lose some of its impact after a (short) while. But then Scorn makes me motion-sick and headachey so I’m not really in the best space to appreciate it.
Just saw The Forgotten City is leaving Xbox Game Pass at the end of the month; if you’re subscribed but haven’t played it you’re missing out on a fantastic exploration / knowledge game, and Magistrate Sentius is judging you. I don’t see this game mentioned often enough.
Magistrate Sentius
It took me half an hour to find the trick (even though I feel like I've seen it before in the archives), and then five more minutes to find the mistake I'd made early on. One of those crosswords I'm happy to subscribe for.

The Case of the Golden Idol went very quickly from "hmm that's interesting" to "oh fuck off, I have ADHD and you can't ask me to track all that!" Also I have no idea why I was convinced it was *by* Lucas Pope.
If Quest 2 did nothing else at launch but promise to easily and instantly connect you with friends like you were sitting on the same couch and could watch all your favorite TV and movie content together, it would be far more popular than today. Hardware is here, services are not.

I find it hilarious that the internet at large went “lol, legs? I have legs right now at my desk, buffoons!” then that reveal turns out to be entirely faked. They weren’t subtle about it, either — Zuck grabbing his foot 1) was weird?! 2) will never ever work in any actual system.
Nah, he’s so desperate to own a platform, he is hurting VR. Left to grow naturally, VR would be smaller but stronger. Zuck so supercharged it… it’s like he is forcing a 4 year old to perform a senior piano recital instead of praising them for reciting the alphabet.

The folks who are shitting on Zuck re Oculus should shut up. He is trying to invent something new. Just give him some time to try. Why tear down someone who is actually trying hard?

“Do we really want to listen to a whole film of Charles Martinet going “woohoo” in falsetto…” Charles Martinet voiced Paarthurnax, the dragon in Skyrim who teaches you shouts. He’s a professional actor with a wide range. He 100% could have pulled off a movie appropriate voice. twitter.com/Polygon/status…
