That is – most CoCs spend most of their time listing things you shouldn’t do and how you‘ll be punished for doing them. RMS’s document talks about things you should do as well as things you shouldn’t, and *why*. (CoCs I’ve seen have some language along those lines, but not much.)

To oversimplify, CoCs feel like a welcome mat to people worried about abuse from others (especially new community members). RMS’s document feels like a welcome mat to people who want to improve their own behavior (especially existing community members). But why not both?

On the contrary, these guidelines are far less intimidating and stifling than a CoC that talks endlessly about punishments and consequences. Please don't is usually better than THOU SHALT NOT too.
