John Bolton has advocated US retreat from UN and other international agencies. Now, he is concerned that China is gaining too much influence at the UN.http://bit.ly/2UbSlUl

I get why this is an attractive framing of the issue, but I'm not sure I necessarily see the inconsistency between the Bolton approach to the UN generally and US efforts to resist Chinese influence at the UN specifically.

Moreover, Bolton's career has has in fact taken the UN quite seriously--largely because he sees many of its activities as potentially harmful to US interests. Resisting PRC attempts to use UN as a way of promoting itself would seem to be consistent with that Bolton policy.

There is no room for vacuum in International Relations. Good for the UN that there is competition for it.

The impact of Chinese engagement and of US withdrawal is also quite visible at the UN in Geneva. Read my piece:http://bit.ly/2OLr0SW

That completes phase one of his agenda. Next phase: advocate dismantling the UN entirely to prevent China from gaining to much influence over the organization.
