I'm not an Elon Musk fan, by any means, but his recent letter (http://www.themindsetapp.com/musk-letter/ ) is a good opportunity for me to relate a recent story about my Tesla car ...
I have a Tesla Model S. It's very nice, and it can accelerate like crazy. I'm not really a car person, but this car has made me one. The quietness, the safety, the convenience of just plugging it at home, are all great, I love it.

The interior is less "fancy" than BMWs, Audis or Mercs in the same price range, but I'm fine with that, I'm not out for that. I also find the auto-steering to be amazing, though use it with care. Anyway, to my story ...

The Model S has door handles that retract and recess into the car. It looks super cool and futuristic, but it's actually to reduce drag.pic.twitter.com/ZnpXpj0ODW

Anyway, a few months in, mine got "stuck" out; first the driver side, then the passenger side a week later. They stopped retracting. I put this down to build "Oh those infamous Tesla build quality issues" and made a note to call the service dept some time when it bothered me ...

But the freaky thing is this: not too long after they got stuck, I got back into my car and it the screen was blank, and the car booted up fresh, and the handles work totally fine again.

I am near-certain that the car, or Tesla remotely, diagnosed the problem and fixed it somehow without me having to do anything. Maybe it ran the handle motors a few times one night, or just reset a broken state machine. That fix blows my mind, because it seemed mechanical to me.

You can cynically say that the handles never should have gotten stuck in the first place, and that's true, but I'm more amazed by the possibilities of a car that can just fix itself. Also new features every few weeks. It's just cool.
