Yeah, there are a lot of really hard edge cases in structures, and that's not well covered by the 'easy mode'. But distributed systems don't even have the 'easy mode' from what I've seen, let alone understanding what an earthquake would do.

Established engineering fields have also established much more of a safety factor on a lot of things, and an deep understanding of why failures matter. Our branch of engineering has a long way to go on that understanding and maturity.
