Some USB audio devices support volume control, and sometimes not. As in, sometimes the volume slider on my Mac is greyed out and the keyboard volume keys don't do anything. Anyone know what the difference is or how to tell when reading the specs of a USB DAC?

Maybe the dac announces (wrongly) that it has its own volume control (an analog knob) ? And the os decides it's up to the dac? I've seen it happening when sending raw bitstream to my home theatre. (like dts or Dolby). Then windows decides it can't control the volume

Maybe something is playing a high quality bitstream to the dac ? (Like raw DSD and the dac claims to support it?) Pure speculation but just putting it out there
