Some USB audio devices support volume control, and sometimes not. As in, sometimes the volume slider on my Mac is greyed out and the keyboard volume keys don't do anything. Anyone know what the difference is or how to tell when reading the specs of a USB DAC?
I'd have thought it would make much more sense to send the raw bits always to a device, and let it attenuate.

A PC OS needs to be able to mix various audio sources and adjust their levels. And sound devices also have their own set of level controls, probably implemented in software on the device. So if ‘raw bits’ do actually exist in practice, they are rare.

Then it makes even less sense that the volume controls ever get greyed out :(
