Some USB audio devices support volume control, and sometimes not. As in, sometimes the volume slider on my Mac is greyed out and the keyboard volume keys don't do anything. Anyone know what the difference is or how to tell when reading the specs of a USB DAC?
The reads like a discussion about how get volume information from the device to the laptop/desktop. Maybe to have a physical knob on a device control the system volume. I'm wondering about the other way. I want a DAC but I also want my keys to work!

I took it to mean that there was a way to use HID to both report the DAC status as well as to send up/down. Like on page 28 of this DAC data sheet. http://www.ti.com/product/PCM2707C/technicaldocuments …. Apologies if I'm way off on my understanding.
