Some USB audio devices support volume control, and sometimes not. As in, sometimes the volume slider on my Mac is greyed out and the keyboard volume keys don't do anything. Anyone know what the difference is or how to tell when reading the specs of a USB DAC?

I’d think the volume control happens in software, as a true 24-bit quality variable gain control is not a practical analog circuit.

I think that might be happening too, but so hard to tell. So when I use a professional DAC it's all like "only send me the raw bitstream, leave everything to me", but my USB-C connected LG monitor is like "IDGAF, you can attenuate the bitstream in SW and send me the result".

The reads like a discussion about how get volume information from the device to the laptop/desktop. Maybe to have a physical knob on a device control the system volume. I'm wondering about the other way. I want a DAC but I also want my keys to work!
