Folks are hating on Zoom for using ECB encryption, but has anyone checked if it uses variable bit rate audio, or silence suppression? Both make it trivial to decipher spoken words, using very boring traffic analysis. I've seen many VOIPs and VideoConfs make this mistake.https://twitter.com/AaronToponce/status/1246153323649970176 …

At least the CCD/CMOS noise on your webcam sensor will ensure that no two image frames are identical when encrypted with ECB. it's still no excuse, but at least background noise is watching out for you in that regard. Thank you universe.

Often video and audio are on different channels (e.g. web sockets) because you want audio to take priority and to clock the video from that. Audio is the more interesting channel to target. Even when multiplexed, if the video is relatively static, targeting the audio works.

Could you explain a bit? What effect would they have on the encryption? (the variable bit rate or silence suppression)

Packet sizes. They see X bits of encrypted random looking data, then Y bits, then Z bits, and by then matching this against known samples of how well different vocalized sounds compress in different languages they can guess what was said. Like guessing what's under your tarp.

I'm just stunned that the very people who would usually be howling mad you 'rolled your own crypto' are bending over themselves backwards demonstrating outrageous lack of integrity when it impacts a product THEY like.

It's day 3758 of the apocalypse. Infosec's rite of passage has become finding new zerodays in zoom. To prove your worth you have to invite yourself to the zen master's private meeting using only yet undiscovered techniques. New recruits are arriving at an exponential rate.

I wouldn’t say that VBR makes it “trivial” to decipher words. The entropy is simply not high enough. It also depends a lot in the codec that is being used. On what research exactly do you base your assessment?
