While standing in Lowe’s months ago I witnessed two different people walk in on cellphones, look at the empty rack of N95 masks, and walk right out. I wanna resist stereotyping but these folks didn’t look like they were about to work with paint or concrete.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1239906783432454144 …

One big reason we don't have enough masks is that not only did China stop exporting them completely after COVID-19, China went and "bought up much of the rest of the world's supply." We should have ramped up domestic production in January but we didn't.😢 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/13/business/masks-china-coronavirus.html … pic.twitter.com/HYGHUARNfR

The N95 masks in hardware stores aren't usually the same sort medical personnel use. They can work in a pinch, of course, but they aren't fluid-resistant -- if you get blood or vomit on your mask, they stop being protective.

Those respirators that are designed to filter VOCs are not the same as the disposable respirators used by medical personnel.pic.twitter.com/djcZ23OcZt

There are reasons medical personnel don't use the giant reusable respirators intended for paint fumes, mold, etc. that you showed but instead use lightweight disposable ones intended for use in the medical field.

You *can* buy cup-style N95 respirators at the hardware store but, as I mentioned, they aren't typically fluid-resistant. People looking for respirators at the hardware store months ago were just looking for respirators for a job, not part of a bioweapons conspiracy.

I didn't say *anything* about bioweapons. That's really not helpful to a productive conversation. The reality is that on Feb 4, at my Lowes N95's were sold out and in space of a few minutes I saw two people walk in, speak an Asian language on phones, see the shelf, and leave.

I thought it was interesting that something I personally observed and thought curious at the time later turned out to be consistent with what @zeynep just wrote in NYT. There are certainly other explanations. Pure coincidence, individuals acting independently, etc.pic.twitter.com/cBiRo5KnAr
