Long time @Sonos fan here. At home I have 2 amps, a connect, and 3 play:5's and I've gotten some for my Dad as gifts. Only one is impacted by this, but it would take one huge turnaround for me to give them a penny ever again.https://twitter.com/therealfitz/status/1219656757242474496 …

I work for Amazon so I am biased, but I don't work on Echo or Alexa. I've personally been involved in huge backflip investments to make sure that the oldest Kindle v1's still work, at @JeffBezos's insistence. So I'm thinking it's time for these ... https://www.amazon.com/Echo-Link-Amp-amplify-speakers/dp/B0798GJVTR/ …

I’ve got 6 devices that will be toast, with a total investment of 24 (thousands of $). I will likely deal with no software upgrades for awhile and then move to amazon devices. Supporting legacy hardware is a challenge, but they can do better.

Why do those old devices need updates? They work very well as they are. I don’t get the backlash here. Sonos isn’t stopping anything from continuing to work just as it does today.

They’re warning everyone that their devices will stop working in the future, forcing the user to chose between abandoning otherwise functional legacy equipment or taking efforts to refuse software updates on the rest of their non-legacy gear, which will limits those devices.

I haven’t seen the warning of devices stopping working. I’ll go back and look. They are actively working on a solution to the no-updates for other devices problem. Prob solve with zones. If they don’t move on from the ancient hardware it will hog tie them for future features.

They’ve said legacy devices will not function on the same Sonosnet as devices with post-May firmware. Given the primary purpose of a Connect is to add line in capability to other Sonos speakers, that basically means the device will not function for the purpose it was sold.

Now sure in order to keep it working with my Play1s I can refuse updates for now. But Sonos have past form in being quite forceful in new firmware requiring new app updates and vice versa. In addition, the non-legacy Play1s will slowly lose functionality if not kept current.

Just to be a bit specific: the functionality with streaming services depends on keys that have to be rotated and updated over time. Once they expire, that streaming service will no longer work.

Do you know if this will also apply to the TuneIn radio service? Personally couldn’t care less about Spotify and Apple Music, but losing the radio suggests best option is to sell up now while I can still get cash for them while the Play1s are still not legacy.
