People in my timeline are debating whether it’s better to teach elliptic curves through geometric analogies or just to spin up Sage and make your own elliptic curve. Unrepresented is my opinion: stop spending so much time teaching newcomers about elliptic curves.

And even trying to become an expert, learn how groups and group operations work first, including cofactors, etc. Then field arithmetic. The actual elliptic curve math in the middle, with the cute gifs and stuff? I think it distracts from the interface (the group).

Time tested technique over here with total beginners is to suggest reading Simon Singh's book about Andrew Wiles cracking Fermat's last theorem.
