Hey @_msw_ @MarcJBrooker @colmmacc is there like a top ten list of "AWS operations get off my lawn" facts? If there's "Five Whys Works For Us" and "Don't Deploy on Friday", there's probably more...?https://twitter.com/dvassallo/status/1214416442268848130 …

Both of your thoughts are wrong. At Amazon, no-deploy-fridays is a strict SVP directive. There are very few firing offenses there. Breaking this rule is one of them. Oh, and it’s also no-deploy December. And most of November. And a big part of April. And February. And July. 😱

No. We don't really want to get in the business of saying our way is the right way and that others are wrong, especially when our practices evolve over time. Anyway, the statement in the quoted thread is not accurate.

Matt's right that the statement in the thread is not accurate. There's a good description of how we think about this in the "controlling when software is released" section of https://aws.amazon.com/builders-library/going-faster-with-continuous-delivery/?did=ba_card&trk=ba_card … Now I feel like I'm feeding the trolls (not you @jhscott, the person you quoted)

Ah, thanks! I read a lot of the builders library when I dropped but I think mostly reliability/resilience focused. AWS CI/CD should also be interesting.

I feel slightly bad about the poking fun framing of my question but it turned up some great discussion so 🤷‍♂️. Appreciate the pointers.

One thing I’d say we do feel strongly about is that monitoring should first reflect the end customer experience. We try to pile on that before all sorts of internal efficiency metrics.
