We've been playing with the new graviton2 EC2 instances and they absolutely scream! Fastest AES-NI and SHA acceleration I've seen yet, great for webservers. All of the memory is AES256 encrypted with ephemeral keys that are thrown away on reboot!https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/coming-soon-graviton2-powered-general-purpose-compute-optimized-memory-optimized-ec2-instances/ …

In-hardware DRAM encryption is defense in depth for physical threats. It also addresses challenges when using next generation non-volatile memory (like Optane) as server memory in some cases.

Now, some technology like Optane DC *do* implement encryption, but today it's implemented in the media controller on the memory module. Personally I prefer the encryption to be as far toward the memory controller of the processor as possible.
