Coming to terms with socialism as a possibility in the USA. As a lifetime Republican (pre-trump) - it's tough. The StarTrek model seems the best. Captain still gets best quarters, but all crew members have what they need. There needs to be a reason for people to work hard?

I never, ever would have thought this way. But trump made it obvious to me as a sentient being.

I'm quite far to the left, but I hope the US doesn't get socialism. Would love social democracy, which for me means more progressive taxation (I'd pay more!), and free healthcare/education. It's 100% selfish though; I get to live in a richer society that way.

I grew up in a Leninist state. The thing that bugged me the most was that even though my grandparents (who were country-known scientists) lived a comfortable life, it was all the politically connected folks that had nice houses, nice cars, and nice vacations.

It's mostly true in the US that scientists live a comfortable, but not spectacular life. The people with the fancy houses and vacations are in business, software, finance etc. Amazon returning intern offer is roughly double what some people I know with PhDs get paid.

Yes, only the scientists were making less money than taxi drivers, and everyone except for the party bosses was equally poor. The idea of socialism in America makes me wonder if Pinochet was right. He was a horrid mass murderer but maybe he saved his country from something worse

A couple dozen of my family members died in Gulag, so as far as I am concerned, socialists are Nazis with better PR skills.
