JSLint's "no evil" clause is a good example of an attempt: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5138866

The central problem is that people (clearly) can't agree on what is evil, or what are human rights abuses, and sometimes those with the power of legal interpretation are part of the problem.

It took me a few years to really internalize it, but I've come to believe that trying to be a better and more moral person, and being generous even with those who we profoundly disagree and are a threat, is genuinely ethical.

People are persuaded one by one, little by little, and often there's a lot of indoctrination to overcome, but contact helps. Not that evil shouldn't be fought too, it should, but being open and generous is not complicity, it can be the opposite.

That’s my nightmare. I don’t think it’s about letting users figure out their definition of evil; as the author you should have the right to restrict based on yours. I’ve never intentionally worked on software for military purposes, but it scares me that I don’t have full control.
-
I'm not sure I'd benefit in a world where creators can morally discriminate. The pervasive default valorization of the military makes me believe otherwise. Besides, I believe that creative output is discovered and revealed to us more than it is invented or owned by us.

The "populist era" across US and EU keeps puzzling me. What right should a company or a developer have not to sell/share their software with a government that in the end is doing what the majority of people in that state wants to do? Are we tackling the issue from the right side?
-
I mean, do we really think that Hitler would have been a bit better if he did not have so much IBM provided compute power? And, do we really think software could become a serious blocker to a (meaningless, brutal) immigration policy?

Someone (I thought Ronald Regan, but seems not) had a relevant quote: "Do as much good as you can, and only as much bad as you have to."
